Origin of Natya Shastra

The origins of Indian Dance: The Natya Shastra

The Natya Shastra is the principal work of dramatic theory in the Sanskrit drama of classical India. It was written by the sage Bharata Muni. It is a set of precepts on the writing and performance of dance, music and theatre. While the Natyasastra primarily deals with stagecraft, it has come to influence music, dance, and literature as well. Thus, an argument can be made that the Natyasastra is the foundation of the fine arts in India.

The Natya Shastra was created at the beginning of Treta Yug by Brahma on the request of Indra and other devas. as an object of diversion (Kridaniyaka). As the lower castes (Shudras) were not entitled to listen to the four Vedas (Sama, Yajur, Rig and Atharva), Brahma created the Natya Shastra as the fifth Veda which was open to all, irrespective of caste and creed.

Prior to the creation of the Natya Veda, Brahma entered a yogic trance in which he recalled the four Vedas. He drew the recitative (Paathya) from the Rig, songs (Geeta) from the Sama, histrionic representation (Abhinaya) from the Yajur and sentiments (Rasa) from the Atharva.
These aspects are the four main constituents of the Natya Veda.

When the Natya Veda was ready, the Gods expressed their inability to practise it, and Brahma passed it to Bharata Muni and his one hundred sons who were asked to practise it.After the ordainment from lord Brahma, Bharatha approached to demigods Gandharvas and apsaras.Later they performed Nritta,Nritya and natya in front of Lord shiva in Kaila yan Kiri. However, lord shiva enjoyed the performance and  asked Thandu munivar to teach the narthana that was created by lord shiva in order to remember his creation. This named as"Thandavam" as it  propagated bt munivar called thandu.

There is also another story of mythology, which says that goddess Parvathi taught a dance called lashyam to usha the daughter of Banasura  a demon and the wife of Anurudhran,Usha later taught the same lashya to gobikas of the Dwaraka, later it was introduced to the mankind.

Bharathanatyam is one of the most cherished and the most popular of classical dance. It  has become an art form enjoyed by not only Hindus but those of many religions. It is a dance of mind&soul. With the changing situation and thinking, people are trying to find newer ways to Improve their skills.  along with that here I'm going to write all advanced basis of Bharatanatyam as well as all the information about learning Natyam to aspiring the students. My aim is to sensitize people about the beauty of the art and along with to fulfill the scarcity of relevant books on Bharatanatyam. studies.i have included both the theory part& the practical which Will be most beneficial for the students from grade 6-13  who faces examinations on Bharatanatyam and for the examination of North Ceylon Oriental Music Society. It will be available in both English & Tamil languages. It is a humble attempt to provide information on the form which  I have learned.
